I discovered this version of Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in a small shop, no bigger than three meters squared, based in one of Asagaya's narrow streets. At the back of the shop, was a step leading to the Tatami room, where the shop's owner, an old lady sat. The fragile Oba San, granny, was strategically positioned where she could simultaneously watch TV and, if needed, oversee her little shop. I discovered this particular Netsuke, hiding amongst many new, old and kitsch items in a glass cabinet.
The Netsuke reveals Hotei with the child Karako. This combination brings about a safe labour and birthing to its owner. This late 19th Century Hotei is shiny and smooth with a light patina. I tested the feel of this obese happy god, a well-fed Karako crawling from behind over his right shoulder, in my palm. It fits my hand comfortably, their faces buried in my palm, their backs a bit rougher against my fingers. I think that this must be the way that this Netsuke was held in the past. Even if Netsuke were traditionally an item of men's attire, I can visualise ladies close to 150 years ago holding him, squeezing him, maybe on the way to pray at Tokyo's famous Suitengu Shrine for a safe birth.
